WAYS THAT THE BODY SHOP SHOWS CSR
The examples below are the five core values of The Body Shop.
Support Community Fair TradeThe Body Shop has its own community fair trade program which is independently verified, designed to help third world communities improve their lives and alleviate poverty. They are commited to sourcing organic fair trade ingredients all over the world. For example, they source organic argan oil from Morroco and Shea Butter from Ghana. These are just a few examples of some of the ingredients that The Body Shop sources organically and pays a fair price to. Last year, the Body Shop sourced 3 million kilos of fair trade ingredients, worked to improve the lives of 25,000 community fair trade farmers in 21 countries. In total, the programme's spending last year was over 21 million pounds.

Activate Self EsteemOne of The Body Shop's main aims is to run a business that makes people feel good about themselves. " We are an ethical beauty brand that values who people are and what they do, not just how they look". The Body Shop have run many campaigns, including the body- positive campaign that featured a doll and helped to spark debate around self esteem and challenge stereotypes. In 2013, self- esteem for disabled people became one of three funding priorities for The Body Shop Foundation. In the media, The Body Shop also helps to challenge stereotypes through their marketing. Every single image that they display is not photoshopped, with their model's size or shape being altered in any way- they also use a diverse range of models with different body shapes and skin tones.

They do this by using their global presence to campaign in the media and in their stores, as well as working with their suppliers to expand ethical trade practices that respect worker's rights. In 1998, The Body Shop partnered with Amnesty International in the "Make your Mark" campaign and helped to free 17 wrongfully incarcerated prisoners. From 2008-2010, they raised 2 million pounds for the Staying Alive Foundation who used the money to raise awareness about HIV in young people. Perhaps the most succesful human rights campaign that the Body Shop have run is the Stop Sex Trafficking of Young People, which moblised 7 million people to demand action. 24 governments commited to introduce new legislation to protect those at risk and support those affected.

Against Animal TestingThe Body Shop was the first cosmetics company of its time to be against animal testing. They have never used animal testing and never will, and all of their products are vegetarian and free from animal cruelty. In 1989, The Body Shop became the first cosmetics and beauty company to campaign against animal testing. As a result of the widespread campaign, the UK banned cosmetic testing on animals in 1998. In 2004, campaigning carried out by The Body Shop contributed to a European Union ban on animal testing. Today, their campaign continues as they push for a global ban on animal testing. Instead of using animal testing on their own products, they use a combination of computer analytics and patch testing on people. The Body Shop have received many awards for their stance and advocacy against animal testing, including the Best Cruelty Free Cosmetics award from PETA, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the RSPCA.

The Body Shop has recently been very foccused on this area of CSR, and structured their 2016-2020 strategy, as well as their Enrich Not Exploit Commitment. The next steps for this company is to globally reduce their energy consumption, and C02 emissions.
